His parents were William [Dan] and Ethel and he was the eldest of 7 children and had three brothers – Archie, Howard [Jimmy], and Bob and three sisters Bella, Rose Emily [Dolly], and Olive. His very good friend was Bill Collier who had a sister called Minnie. Norman and Minnie were married in 1927 and had two children Ethel and Norman. Norman contracted Progressive Muscular Atrophy a rare form of Motor Neurone Disease at a time when very little was known about the disease and no facilities existed to help and support either him or his family. It was a traumatic time. Norman was renowned as a cheerful and resourceful man who used his wit, intelligence, and strong practical sense to help to combat the limitations imposed by the condition. A warm affectionate and much loved man, he died in West Hartlepool Co Durham in 1940.
